NHRC's own Steve Gurney won gold in men’s masters single sculls in both 2000m and 1000m events, this past March 15th, at the Long Beach Rowing Association's Spring Regatta. Steve also took silver with Jaime Bea, a NHRC affiliate member, in both 2x and 4x 1000m races, as well, while Jaime took silver medals in the masters 1x 2000m and 1000m events. Congratulations to both Steve and Jaime on a job well done!
The Long Beach Rowing Association Spring Regatta draws mostly Southern California rowers and scullers from San Diego, Newport Beach, Los Angeles, and Long Beach. As many of you are aware, our Steve is a wintertime sojourner of San Luis Obispo, California ("NHRC West"), and he frequently competes in West Coast racing while the rest of us are either in the tanks or chopping ice off our riggers.
For this particular regatta, Steve raced at the Long Beach Marine Stadium, which has hosted rowing events ever since the 1932 Los Angeles Olympics. Since then, many of the nation’s top rowers have competed there in Olympic and national masters trials and championships, as well as in countless collegiate and junior competitions. Long Beach has an abundance of everything rowing.
According to Steve, conditions were flat calm for the early morning 2000m events. A later quartering port tailwind proved challenging, and crabs awaited everywhere, ready to bite any oar blade not released cleanly or carried too low during recovery. Technique mattered, and both Steve and Jaime rose to the challenge and excelled. Congratulations once again, to both of you!

Mystic Coastweeks 2008
This year's Mystic Coastweeks Regatta (Sunday, September 14th, 2008) saw a number of NHRC victories, including reclaimings of several victories from last year. Also on hand for a meet-and-greet opportunity were Olympic rowers Anna Cummins and Michelle Guerette. Both had raced the previous day in the Battle Between the Bridges, the first regatta in the annual Mystic Weekend of Rowing.

The Day Before Mystic (2008)
This year's Mystic Coastweeks regatta (September 14th, 2008) saw the usual high level of participation by NHRC crews, including three fours raced by graduates from this past summer's Learn To Row Class.
I stopped by the boat house the afternoon before Coastweeks to help with final loading of the trailer, and, at the request of Coach Nich Lee, to give the LTR grads a quick course in de-rigging boats and proper trailer tie-down techniques. John and Betty Sword were on hand to transport the trailer up to Mystic that night, and Bob Nash and Carroll Brooke also came by to help out.

The NHRC trailer team uses only the most state-of-the-art, time-proven, safety-oriented strapping and slinging techniques!
Meanwhile, the three graduate crews went out on the water for some final practice pieces under the auspices of Dean Poniros. Once they were off the water, we got their boats loaded and the trailer secured, and John and Betty were on their way.

I then decided to hang out on the dock for a while with the few remaining folks, and Ellen showed me the blue and green "NHRC tips" painted on her nails! All of her boatmates sported the same. Her crew was not only going to row well at Coastweeks -- they were also determined to push regatta haute couture to a whole new level. Well done, ladies!

Mystic Coastweeks Regatta Update: Entry Deadline is Tonight (Monday, September 8th)
The entry deadline for Mystic Coastweeks is tonight (Monday night, September 8th). This is a great race, so if you're considering going, please do, and please get your entries in ASAP via Ronin Racing. This season, Sara Beddow and Mark Schofield have offered to coordinate the allocation of club boats to teams (with the understanding that the LTR graduates will be racing at least two coxed fours -- and please see additional note below about need for one female rower to fill a boat). Please make your club boat intentions known to Sara and Mark, so that they may coordinate boat usage. In particular, they need to know:
- Your name (and your team mates)
- Which event you wish to enter
- Club boat you would like to use (1st and 2nd choice!!!)
- Whether you’ll require space on the trailer
Please send this information to Sara by mid-day on Monday, September 8th. Boat requests will be allocated by 5pm.
And also...by special request...your's truly will be at the boathouse early Saturday AM to supervise/instruct/verify trailer loading (what a deal!).
Finally, Dean Poniros reports that he DESPERATELY needs one female rower for one of the Coastweeks LTR coxed fours. He is desperately seeking one female rower above the age of 27 who can row port. LTR will have one quick practice on 9/13 in the afternoon, and then the race will be at 1:30 in Mystic on 9/14. Please email Dean ASAP if you can help out. He needs to know by Monday or he cannot register the boat. The boat that is seeking a rower does not have aggressive racing goals -- they want to row 2000m at a medium stroke rating, work for a good boat set, and just have a good time. Dean can be reached at Dean.Poniros@yale.edu. Please try to help out if you can!
Weekend Racing: Springfield Riverfront Head Race
Despite all the tropical storm threats for Satuday, a small, but brave, team of NHRC competitors ventured up to Springfield, MA to participate in the Springfield River Front Head Race. Mark Schofield (shown in photo) took 1st place in his singles race...way to go, Mark! Paul and Sara (Beddow, that is, not Palin) also rowed their Mx2X race well, despite a bouy violation. Sara said that the day turned out fine -- cloudy, but otherwise good weather, flat water, nice course, nice people, and only one hour away from home! Hopefully more NHRC crews will consider this race for next season. It sounds like a great venue!

Regatta Update: Providence Sweeps and Sculls
NHRC attended Providence Sweeps and Sculls this year, hosted by the Narragannsett Boat Club, in Providence, RI. Here are some photos, courtesy of Sara Beddow. Sara reports that it was all-out, total club effort. Unfortunately, no results seem to have been published yet (neither on the NBC web site, nor on Row2k).

Regatta Update: Cromwell Cup
Quite a few NHRC boats attended the Cromwell Cup, in Cambridge MA, this past July 13th. Results included the following:
Good racing, every one! In all the years that I had been managing regattas-away, I don't recall any boats ever going to the Cromwell Cup. Nice to see that we managed to add this to our racing season this year! (No photos that I am aware of, unfortunately).
- NHRC W8+: First in their qualifying heat; third in their final. This crew consisted of Strawn, Novak, Brackett, Oechtering, Mingo, Gallagher, O'Donnell, Kelly, and Botta.
- Mens Open 4+: 2nd in their qualifying heat. Carbonella, Chrisman, Caszatt, and Poniros, with Rebecca Kinsler coxing.
- Mens M8+: 3rd in their qualifying heat. Dannemann, Thetford, Thackaberry, Duthie, Williams, Pankowski, Brooke, Reimann, and Botta coxing.
- Mens M4+ 3rd in their qualifying heat. Crew consisted of Dannemann, Thetford, Thackaberry, Pankowski, and Botta as coxswain.
- MM4X (final): 3rd place quad consisting of Williams, Duthie, Brooke, and Reimann.

Regatta Calendar for 2008
Greetings all.
It's time to start planning the 2008 NHRC Racing Season. Below is a preliminary listing of (mostly local) masters regattas for 2008. As a first draft calendar, it will be revised quite a bit in the weeks ahead, as more regatta information for the upcoming season becomes available.
Regattas whose names are in bold font are those that (historically) are usually well-attended by the New Haven Rowing Club. However, there is no cast-in-stone commitment by the club as a whole to attend any particular event -- it all depends on level of interest and availability of transportation. So as the season progresses and foks get more organized, please communicate your interests to the Regattas Away Committee. Also, we will attempt to secure and announce transportation commitments as early as possible this season. If you require use of the trailer, please check with me to ensure that the trailer is actually going a specific race before entering your boat.
