Announcements, Thursday, April 12

Our first announcement is that 61 people logged onto the blog yesterday, so we are off to a good start. The next task is to train everyone to check it just as they check their email (ten times) every day. For a little while, I will send emails out through the Yahoo newsgroup to alert you to new postings like this one, and then we'll see if I can stop spamming you and still have you want to read the blog.

Our second announcement is that there is supposed to be a huge, whacking storm on Sunday. If you were planning to row, keep your eye on how fast this storm is tracking toward the northeast. Or log some family time in anticipation of a busy rowing season.

Other announcements:

Rick Dyer reminds us that John Riley Sculling camp weekend is scheduled at NHRC May 12th-13th, and there are openings. I am assuming that since Rick is announcing it that he is the contact. For those of you who don't know what I'm talking about, I've never done this camp, but there are very experienced scullers who swear by Riley's approach. From what I understand, he is has a *big* personality, and people remember what he says. Since I have also heard many amusing tales of Riley camps past, it also sounds like it is a lot of fun, hard work, and a great way to spend time with club members. For newer members, it's also a great way to get some intense coaching and get to know folks.

John Poole is ordering PFD's for a group of people: at last count it was fourteen, which is less than 25% of the membership. I looked on the list and it's mostly scullers. Sweep rowers, be aware that when you are not with a launch (which is much of the time, even on coaching days), you need to have a PFD too, so you might want to get in touch with JP and have him order for you too. I ordered the fanny pack variety from this website and you can also get them here. Mine is in camo. Hot, hot, hot.

Also note that there is a cheap version of the fanny pack PFD, but I think it's a bad bet. You have to assemble it, in the water, as you are trying to swim. And assuming that none of us would need to use a PFD unless we were in trouble anyway, buy the pricey one.
