Sculling Coaching Update

Mitz Carr reports that our sculling coaching sessions have come to an end. Last week both Leanne and Mark Davis, our sculling coaches, said that they could not continue coaching at NHRC. Mark is the Yale freshman heavyweight coach and will likely have both morning and afternoon commitments for Yale, and Leanne has just changed jobs, now working for City Seed, and wants to put more focus to her new opportunity. Mitz reached out to two new Yale coaches and had some discussions that she hoped would result in a seamless transition, but this evening the "final opportunity" decided not to coach at NHRC.

But scullers...DO NOT DESPAIR! After several desperate pleas, Leanne Davis is coming to our rescue and has offered to coach one day a week until the Head of the Charles. So, on Wednesday mornings she will arrive at 5:45am and launch immediately to follow and coach folks as they make their way down to Yale for the head race. She will like then position herself at a point on the course to view all scullers as they race by and then follow-up the last group. Afterwards she can offer folks comments on what she saw. This is the best way to get the most folks coached in one day and is specifically helpful to those preparing to race this fall. Some of these sessions/races will be videotaped!

Mitz and the Coaching Committee are continuing to work to find coaches for sculling, but from now until the 3rd week on October, Leanne has agreed to the Wednesday Head Race schedule and Mitz urges scullers to make use of this.

Odds and Ends

Coaching: Nich Lee, our sweep coach has created a a blog to help us in our training: it has been added to the links at the right.

Sunshine Committee: As many of you know, Helma Chartier fell and broke her shoulder. Nancy Brackett tells us that she would probably appreciate a call while she mends. Dianne Kelly reminds us that anyone who is interested in hosting a Saturday breakfast should see her.

Derby Sweeps and Sculls: if you have not gotten back to Lisa Brailey about volunteering, do so!

Cleaning: Our new cleaning service is doing a terrific job (perhaps you noticed that your locker was dusted?), but we are still responsible for the boat bays and other public areas. Baxter has circulated the cleaning schedule by email -- please check your calendar and make sure you can make your assigned day, and if you can't, trade with someone. It's ok to be a little late -- I think up to Tuesday has been the rule of thumb, but it's not ok not to do it at all.

Board Meetings: are the first Wednesday of every month, at 6:30. The next one is on June 4 -- all members are invited to attend.

This is a cool picture of Claire and Dianne (otherwise known as the Dolly Sisters) racing the Fluidesign lightweight double in the Head of the Charles last fall:

For those who love this boat; putting it away means drying it off, opening the hatch and -- most important -- not putting it down on the Stroke Coach, or on one of the riggers (as it was found this morning.) We love it that the boat committee bought this for racing, but it is a somewhat delicate creature, so please take care of it!
