Karyn Gallagher reports: "One of the Professors from Southern Connecticut State University is coordinating a collection of shoes in conjunction with Books and Company (Whitney Ave., Hamden). The destination of these shoes is Kenya. I think this is a great cause and wanted to do my part to help out. I thought I'd reach out to my fellow athletic NHRC friends to encourage all of you to bring in old athletic shoes by next Wed., May 21. I will leave a bin marked Shoes4Africa somewhere on the landing inside the front door."
Linda Craig Moser, the owner of Books and Company, explains: "Kenya produces many of the world's finest competitive runners, yet few people there can afford running shoes. Also, athletic shoes provide protection from devastating waterborne parasites like hookworm that enter through the soles of the feet. "We need shoes for adults and children. The shoes can have some soiling, but no holes or completely worn treads. SHOE4AFRICA states that shoes should have at least 100 miles left on them. Running, shoes, cross-trainers, tennis shoes, soccer shoes and kids' sneakers are all welcome to our collection. "Our goal is to collect 500 pairs of shoes in honor of the Books & Company owner's father, David W. Craig, who died in February. He was a serious runner for more than three decades. His last two pairs of running shoes (displayed at the bookstore) are the inspiration for this collection drive.
