Staining The Boathouse

Paul Roy getting ready to work on the chimney assisted by Sharon Lin

Mark Schofield reports: A small number of dedicated members spent some time the weekend of May 30-31 applying stain to the highest parts of the boathouse. These areas, including the third floor facing the road, and the areas just below the roof line on both long sides, had not been stained since the boathouse was completed in 1995. Back then the work was done using long ladders, but as Rick Dyer said “We’re older and wiser now!” This time the club rented a beam lift with a height capacity of 40 feet. The lift has an extremely heavy base but it proved surprisingly easy to maneuver even in the tight spaces between the outside boat racks. The machine can be driven and the boom operated from the “cage” at the end of the arm, and it only took the different operators five minutes or so to learn how to position it precisely where needed. Most credit should go to Paul Roy who spent over four hours on a hot roof staining and repairing the chimney, and the only thing that fell off the roof was a hammer! Thanks also to Sandy Blanchard, Lisa Brailey, Joh Georgia, Sharon Lin, Todd Ritchie and Susan Schofield.
