Read To Succeed: SVA Tutoring Program

New Haven Rowing Club's own Baxter Walsh has been volunteering his time as a reading mentor in the School Volunteer Association's Pilot Tutoring Program. Founded in 1967, the SVA's mission is to provide various volunteer-oriented educational programs that benefit Bridgeport, CT school children.

In response to our current national emphasis on the importance of literacy , the SVA recently launched a pilot tutoring program at the Geraldine W. Johnson School in Bridgeport. Baxter, who serves as one of several trained literacy volunteers in this program, devotes his time to tutoring several students, with the objectives of building their reading skills and ensuring that they are reading at their grade levels, over a two-year period.

According to Baxter, there are numerous opportunities for new volunteers to get involved in this excellent program, and provide considerable benefit to our local youth. If you are interested in volunteering, or would like to learn more, please feel free to discuss further with Baxter, or to phone program coordinator Anne Gribbon, at 203-576-7808.

Many thanks, Baxter, for volunteering your time to such an excellent community service program!
